Since 2014, an alliance of four indigenous communities has been defending one of the world’s most biodiverse Amazonian regions from exploitation – challenging powerful oil companies and governments. The Alianza Ceibo is made up of the A’i Kofan, Siekopai, Siona and Waorani people. Through their leadership, they have protected miles of Amazon forest and won two landmark court rulings that are helping to save one of the world’s most precious ecosystems.
I wrote a portrait of the Alianza Ceibo for the German environmental magazine Energiewende Magazin, reflecting on the history and future of this outstanding alliance.
